Vanguard Member Highlight:

John Fennebresque,
Partner at McGuireWoods LLC

John Fennebresque, Partner at McGuireWoods LLC This Vanguard Member Highlight is a first in a series of interviews that we plan to include in each Vanguard E-Newsletter. We hope you enjoy it, and if you are interested in allowing us to interview you, or if you would like to interview another Vanguard Society member, please contact us.

As Group Executive and Chief Legal Officer for Duke Energy, Marc Manly certainly has a demanding job, but it doesn't stop him from being a committed volunteer in the community, including serving as ASC's Board Chair for the past two years. Now that his term as ASC Board Chair is coming to an end, he decided to take the opportunity to interview his friend and supporter of arts and culture, John Fennebresque, Partner at McGuire Woods LLC.

Marc: John, the purpose of these interviews is to highlight the great generosity ASC finds within our Vanguard Society. I suspect what caused you to support ASC, will resonate with many, and I hope inspire many more. With that said, tell us why you are passionate & committed to ASC.

John: I have always felt it was important to support the Arts & Science Council. The Arts & Science Council was created by individuals committed to the growth and success of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, ASC's success is critical to the psyche of this community.

This year, it was the focus on cultural education that caused me to step up my support considerably. I felt that if our community were to misstep and lose that critical piece of our education system - that adds enrichment for children, we'd have reason to feel insecure about our future, even though we've had such a successful past.

Marc: John, we certainly thank you for your support this year, and in years past. I wonder; what are your thoughts on the new cultural campus on the south end of center city Charlotte?

John: I think they are fabulous. I am not sure how many other communities could have gotten something like that done given the economy we were facing at the time. Those facilities are the kind of place you want to take friends and family that visit, so they'll know what a great city you live in.

Marc: Agreed. One concern that I've had is that now that these buildings are complete, we'll forget about the continued support these institutions need to thrive. What do you think?

John: I share your concerns, too. But I think ASC plays a critical role in maintaining excitement within the community around those needs. They do a great job of this, but it's imperative that we continue to financially support these institutions. Bricks and mortar are certainly an easier sell, but we all know that you don't just go for the building — the programming is the bread and butter of what these institutions are all about.

Marc: Any final thoughts you would like to leave us with?

John: My support of ASC in many ways has to do with civic pride. Charlotte is a generous community, and when asked — Charlotteans tend to rise to the occasion. ASC is so important because they are the cheerleaders who can get the community behind important projects for the cultural sector. They get people excited. I just hope that this passion that you and I have, is caught by the next generation of supporters too.
